Sandino's Official Seal

Sandino's Official Seal accompanied all his official correspondence from the early days of his struggle.  In it we can see a depiction of a Segovian campesino standing over a seemingly helpless US Marine soldier, keeping him down with his right shoeless foot, and holding him by the hair with his left hand. In the background we see a representation of the  Segovian mountains of northern Nicaragua. The campesino is about to swing his machete to decapitate or mutilate the soldier.

Nicaraguan sociologist Carlos Corea, like Emigdio Maraboto before him, likens the image to a battle between David and Goliath. He also explores some of the likely spiritual and political meaning of the image.

After 1931 Sandino no longer uses this seal and its accompanying motto, and he will substitute them with the motto of the EMECU.
