Augusto C. Sandino 1895-1934

Letter from Alemán Bolaños, 30 December 1930

San Salvador, 30 December 1930

Dear Augusto: I don't care that you have stopped writing to me, what is important is that you get there and that's what we are working for. The great González writes from Veracruz dated November 27 and he tells me: "The actions of Sandino in the Segovias DO NOT go beyond a protest WITHOUT ANY POSIBILITY OF ATTAINING VICTORY... etc. And I have just finished responding to him in one single line: You believe that Sandino will not achieve his goals, I BELIEVE HE WILL, and indeed you will get there.

I recommend to you again:

  1. Do not manufacture martyrs, just chop a few ears off.
  2. Whenever it is possible, capture a Departmental Capital and occupy it for at least 24 hours, decorating two or three trees in the public square with two or three of the most conspicuous pro-Yankee chieftains of the surroundings. Nothing more.

Send your information to our friend the Director of El Diario Latino. Nothing is being published because nothing is known concretely.

Always at your orders in Guatemala.

Most affectionately.

Alemán Bolaños [signature]

[at the bottom of the letter of Gustavo Alemán Bolaños, one can read in hand-written form the following:]

General: I would like that the vendettas, cruelties and abuses disappeared from this war. This is more convenient to the good name of the Liberating Army than the hangings counselled by Alemán Bolaños

José Idiáquez [signature].
